So . . . I recently purchased thor20's old stone finished Jackson Dinky Reverse after selling off another axe I neglected too much. A couple days ago I get an email from the Mrs. saying my guitar came in, but she couldn't help but wonder why I bought a guitar when the very tip (her words) was broken. My immediate response to that response was "wut". As far as I remembered it was in very good shape and nothing was broken so I immediately asked for pictures. I received this:

:icon_sad:

Ok, these may have not been the first pics sent but these are the most recent. It's pretty obvious how this damage occured and I'm pretty upset over the careless handling (my wife said the box looks like it went to war when she saw it on the porch) but at least it appears to be a fairly clean break. Here's the question: What's the best route to go with this? I was thinking wood glue and clamps but would that be enough to fix it? I know it will always have the scar but as long as it stays on I'll be ok. Suggestions appreciated gentlemen.

PS: Yes, a damage claim is in the works.

This report has been due for quite some time, too long actually, but I've been very selfish and living large the last few weeks+ and not doig much interwebz stuff.....

Imagine if you will, a large complex, up in the clouds, with hundreds of shred guitars and tube amps stashed all over the FN place, and all of the axes are perfectly setup, fresh strings and the amps are either uber premo or custom made and dialed in by a mad scientist........ we'll call him.....mmmmm. "Jon" :eusa_whis

Now imagine that to actually get a look at even a 1/4 of the inventory it requires several days, as you need to hit the 30-40 out in the workshop, the 25 in the office, can't miss the 80 in the basement, and of course the hundreds locked up in the deep freeze vault in the underground bunker. Shit, actually there was another 20 or more in the custom shop (different building). Next, imagine that you recieved a GUIDED TOUR from the mad scientist :eusa_clap:notworthy

Now next thing to get into your stream of imagining is that EVERY ROOM that was just described has 3 walls LINED TO THE FREAKIN CEILING with amps and cabinets. (I theorize that a small nuclear reactor is powering the property, but I was unable to ascertain it's location )

Now, as yer sittin around, relaxing and passin yer time away watching the herd of hummingirds fly to the well stocked feeders on the upper wrap-a-round porch and enjoying the view up in the clouds, you might just think, "hey, I would like to play that (insert axe here)"....

Immediately you find yourself with a personel assistant, a gear guru, setup man, roadie and party partner all rolled up into one and he just starts pulling out axes by the dozens and setting them up straight into this amp, then that amp, and hey how bout that amp over there, and as soon as you explore that 1st axe to finger blistering depths, he is sliding another even more killer axe into you hands and re-cases the one you just had. This goes on for hours and hours :eusa_danc and you forget that your hand is cramping and yer fingers are bleeding and finally you take a break, play with the little pup dogs for a bit, go on a critter feeding run about the property, enjoy the scenery some more and the views, piss in the trees and then....

you and the mad scientist go back into the room (pick one, there are many) for another couple of hours of amps and axes.... and you do that several times a day for several days ..

AND THERE ARE STILL UNPLAYED AXES AND AMPS that you didn't get to!!!!:icon_eek:

I will go into details as this discussion gets started but there were 5 guitars that are burned into my soul (all for different reasons) and a couple of amps that I must have. The other 100 axes and amps were all tuned and ready to wail and each had it's own personality and pulled differing songs outta my hands.

Now you tell me if that sounds like "The Guitar Store in Heaven" (copyright Vaugelee 7-29-2010 Hot Times Thread)

PS- imagine experiencing all of that without Stairway being played over and over again and some 16 year old kid shredding at volume 11 like at GC!!!!

I haven't posted this one simply because the amp is powerful enough to scare the whomp outta me.
Seriously.

Seems this older guy out in the hinterlands trusts me to do his bidding on tube amps.
He has the ebay skills, I have the tube talent.
But he hit my limit on this one...

Come home from work and find a 75 US pound box of Baldwin organ amp awaiting me.
4x6L6, 2x12AX7, 2x5U4GB.
Monster...looks like a pure 100 watt power amp, probably from a church organ, not a home model.

Baldwin, but no official ID marks that could be searched for schematics.

So I do the wise thing and let it sit.

(Not good enough, he's asking what's up with that amp)...

So then I did the safe thing and hooked it up with diode subs and attempted to reform those Mallory caps, as big as the 5U4GB's.
It starts off fine, then starts making a nasty hot cooking smell and I unplug the toxic mess and store it in a corner.

Benefactor starts asking again...what's up.
(I'm SCARED, that's what's up)!

Alrighty...a little few cans of Yuengling courage and I hook things up...variac, speakers, fuses, etc.
Bring her up and it seems everyone is happy, but ZERO sound, I mean not a thing out of the speakers.

Time for a pic:

Get some gonads and clip what I don't need, and figure this beast out.

She is wired in two channels, like stereo, but the outputs are extremely unbalanced.

Alligator clipped into the 12AX7's:

And hooked up a couple of healthy old speakers.
Sounds...great?

Zero hum from the circuit.
Primary set of 6L6's sounds really nice.
Second circuit has very little signal.

I have a lot of work cut out for me, to figure out just what to do with this one.

But I think I have a basis for a great stereo power amp?

Conn organ amp is up and running.

I do these once in a while but I don't take much time to explain the process.

Obtain amp...free is good.
But you really don't want to pay much due to the fact that many organ amps, PA amps, and "other" tube amps may not have much that is usable for a guitar or bass amp.

First thing I try to do is get that amp-as is, up and running so I know what I have.
Sounds simple but it can really challenge the troubleshooting skills plus organ amps have so many other functions going on...it has to be divided up and conquered.
PA amps can also have everything including the kitchen sink thrown in, as if they are integrated mixing units with multiple impedance inputs and outputs designed to drive other power amps.

So I examined the Conn, determined it was safe to bring up with the variac while watching current draw (I really need to build a light bulb limiter...) which reforms the old canister caps.
M-fugg, this thing is LOUD for being a simple 2x6L6...but sounds good, no hum.

So now comes the hard part-is it close enough to convert?
Does it need to be gutted and rebuilt?
Or is it just good on its own?

Well time to sketch out what is in it, and research the brain and schems for
what fits.
I'll be gummed, looks REAL familiar.

Tweed bassman, but with a single 12AX7A instead of 12AY7's.
And cascaded already!
Cool, let's try it.

So I dig further into Leo's brain and I find a good fit-the Princeton followed a similar path.

So I installed jacks, volume and Princeton 5D2 style tone stack.
Sounds nice...and LOUD!

Turns out the only conversion is adding a few components to make it guitar-friendly
and cleaning up the stuff that I didn't need in there.

I see a problem with making a head cab though.
The power transformer is directly up against the chassis face.
No room for the cover!

Similar problem with placing the controls, too close to the output transformer so I had to squeeze
it all on one side.
The voicing is close enough to not have to mod the whole amp - a big plus.
Has a couple of blue molded caps in it...good stuff.

Also found out I have some Mullard 12AX7 pulls!
Along with a Mullard 5AR4/GZ34.
Cork sniffer tubes...I'll have to give those a try in the Cyg combo.
