Default what's up with action VS. neck radius

just got done changing strings on a G&L strat (killer SSS conf., thick heavy bodie, ebony board)... changed to lighter strings (cause that's all i had), set intonation, and lowered the action, like i do my ibby's.. woops.. sounded like crap.. had to raise action... plays waaay better now.. so this one plays smoother with high action, but my ibbies play better with a low action.. what the hell.. does this have to do with the radius of the neck? duhhhhh
